The federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires that U.S. consumers be entitled to a free credit report each year.
The government’s goal is to make sure that consumers stay informed, fight identity theft, and get fair treatment.
The only way to get a genuinely free credit report is through the website at www.annualcreditreport.com. This site is sponsored by the three major US credit bureaus: Equifax, Transunion and Experian.
Through this website, you can see your credit report from each of the three major credit reporting agencies once each year. We recommend that MICU members request a credit report from one agency during the first four months of the year, from the second agency during the second four months of the year and from the third agency during the last four months of the year.
This system ensures that you’re monitoring your credit report consistently.
