Target Data Breach




The security of the personal information you trust us with here at Mid-Illini Credit Union is of paramount importance and we take every precaution to protect this sensitive data. Sadly, we can't control things if they're outside of our system.

What we can do is help you understand the impact that the data breach on over 40 million cards nationwide may have on your accounts here at MICU.

First: If you used a Target RED debit card to shop at a Target store between November 27 and December 15, 2013 and that card is attached to your Mid-Illini Credit Union checking account, you must call Target at 866-852-8680 to get help to stop transactions on that card. We are not authorized to make any changes to your Target RED Card account.

Secondly: If you're concerned that your MICU credit or debit card may have been compromised, please call the credit union at 309.661.1166. There are a couple of ways we can help you handle the situation:

  1. You can continue to use your MICU credit or debit card until we know for sure which card numbers have been compromised. We'll recommend that you monitor your accounts closely on our online banking system to make sure no fraudulent activity is taking place. If you suspect fraudulent activity, report it to the credit union immediately.

    If we learn that your MICU credit or debit card number may have been compromised, we will block that card number and issue you a new one, at no cost to you.

    If it is necessary to block your MICU debit card number, you can purchase a MICU Cash Card Prepaid Debit Card to use until your new card arrives. You can load the Cash Card with funds you already have, but the prepaid card is not connected to your checking account, so none of your personal data is at risk.

  2. Or you can ask us to block your card number immediately, which will effectively stop any future fraudulent attempts to use that card number to make unauthorized transactions.

    We will issue you a new card with a new number, and you will receive the card in the mail within 8-10 business days.

    If you're not done with your holiday shopping, and you need some cash to finish it up, we've set up a special (almost) instant-issue Signature Loan program to get you through the holiday until your new credit card arrives. Standard underwriting guidelines will apply to these loans, but we'll do our best to get you in and out of here with money in your pocket, within an hour or so. To get started now, apply online, noting 'data breach' on the loan application where it asks for "Loan Purpose."
